The British tennis star Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from her remaining competitions in 2025 as a result of the illness she has been fighting over the past 10 days.

At 22 years old had planned to participate in events in Asia but chose to travel back to regain her health ahead of launching her preparations for 2026.

Those preparations will involve trainer Francisco Roig, as they have agreed to work together again next season.

Raducanu had her blood pressure taken in her opening round with Ann Li in Wuhan and stopped playing when trailing 6-1 4-1 on an oppressively humid day.

She needed once more a visit from the doctor at the Ningbo Open this week, where she lost in three sets to Chinese wildcard Zhu Lin in the opening round.

Raducanu was also moving noticeably restricted in the third set versus Zhu owing to the lower back problem that has been a concern during parts of the season.

Those results meant an encouraging season, in which she climbed into the top 30 globally after a long gap for the first time since 2022, ended with three successive defeats.

The athlete was close to victory with three match points then was defeated by Pegula in the third stage in Beijing last month.

She secured 28 matches during 2025 and advanced to the semis in Washington, but the highlight of her season was at March's Miami Open.

As Britain's top player reached the quarter-finals of this WTA 1000 tournament, defeating eighth seed Emma Navarro during the tournament then falling in three sets to fourth-ranked Pegula.

She was coached by trainer Mark Petchey between Miami and Wimbledon, with Francisco Roig stepping in ahead of the US Open.

The original arrangement with the former trainer of Nadal was through the season's conclusion but the partnership will continue, with a training session scheduled late this year.

She mentioned that the trial session with Roig post-Wimbledon was like a "black ops mission" as the meeting was kept under wraps.

The player was close to defeating top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka at their first tournament together in Cincinnati in August.

The coach also accompanied Raducanu in New York, where she reached the third round prior to losing to 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina.
