Edwards and O'Neil are two of the early candidates under consideration to succeed Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolves.
Pereira was sacked on the weekend after the team's ten-game winless start to the top-flight season.
Furthermore Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have historic associations to the team - are part of the options to be evaluated by the club ownership.
The manager is currently at Middlesbrough, which would create a potential obstacle to his hiring at Molineux.
Nevertheless the ex- Luton Town manager - who made more than 100 of games for the club during his time as a player - is considered a leading contender for the position.
The 42-year-old is said to have support from the Wolves directors as they begin the search of appointing a new head coach.
O'Neil is additionally appearing as a surprise contender, although he would be a surprising choice given he was sacked by the club in December last year.
The ex- West Ham midfielder is currently unemployed which means Wolves would not be required to provide any buyout fee.
