Red Cross Assists Hamas in Recovery for Bodies of Israeli Hostages in Gaza Strip

A Red Cross official confirmed that its representatives accompanied Hamas officials into zones of the Gaza Strip currently controlled by IDF authority to support the search for the remains of individuals held captive.

Ceasefire Agreements and Captive Remains Handover

As part of the truce negotiated by the United States, which began on October 10, Hamas is obligated to hand over the bodies of all Israeli hostages as soon as possible. In exchange, Israel has consented to transfer 15 Palestinian bodies for every Israeli body returned.

Hamas has so far returned the bodies of 15 of those taken hostage but none in the past five days, as a portion of those remains are thought to be in areas beyond the yellow line designating Gaza’s ceasefire.

Red Cross Involvement as Impartial Facilitator

“At the request of the involved sides, the Red Cross accompanied a party to the conflict as the party looked for the remains of the deceased beyond the military-established ‘yellow boundary’,” said a spokesperson for the committee.

She added: “The parties to the conflict determined the modalities of the mission and entrusted the Red Cross to serve as a impartial mediator. We was had no part in those negotiations.”

She further clarified: “Our team was not involved in the search for the bodies nor does it take part in the physical recovery of human remains.”

International Humanitarian Law and Responsibilities

Under international humanitarian law, it is the responsibility of the parties engaged in a conflict to search for, gather, and retrieve the bodies of the deceased.

US Demand and Regional Recovery Operations

Recently, the American leader delivered a two-day demand to the militant group. “They is going to have to start handing over the bodies of the deceased hostages, including American citizens, quickly, or the additional nations participating in this great peace will take action,” he posted on his online channel.

When the 48-hour deadline approached, the group, joined by the Red Cross, joined teams from Egypt, who were authorised by Israeli authorities to look for bodies beyond the boundary marking the Israeli military’s pullback inside Gaza. An official representative said the Egyptian team would use heavy machinery and vehicles in the search.

Official Verification and Media Coverage

The news was supported by an unnamed Israeli official, who told Hebrew-language media that Hamas representatives had been permitted to access areas of the region under Israel Defense Forces (IDF) control to search for the bodies of hostages, alongside Egypt’s and ICRC personnel.

“For this purpose, representatives were allowed to pass the yellow line,” the source was quoted as stating.

Video published by a media outlet seemed to show members of a specialized group – belonging to the organization’s armed faction tasked with holding hostages – accompanying a Red Cross vehicle in a specific location near a southern city, which lies outside IDF jurisdiction.

Difficulties in Finding Captive Bodies

The search for the bodies of Israeli hostages has turned into one of the most delicate issues in the ceasefire agreed between the two sides. Yet, the attempt to locate the bodies has proved challenging from the beginning, given the existence of an estimated enormous amount of debris across the strip, where, according to health officials, at least 10,000 Palestinians are recorded as unaccounted for, trapped under the rubble.

Conflicting Statements on Remains Location

Hamas has claimed it lacks information on the precise whereabouts of all the bodies, saying it has been unable to communicate with several of its units that had been detaining the captives and were reportedly killed during Israeli bombardments.

In contrast, an Israeli government spokesperson asserted that Hamas was aware of the locations of the remains. “Should the group exerted greater effort, they would be able to recover the remains of our hostages,” the spokesperson said.

US Position and Weapons Surrender Talks

While the US president has acknowledged that some of the bodies are difficult to reach, he said that “others they can return now and, for unknown reasons, they are not.”

“This could be related to the surrender of weapons of the group,” he noted.

The US administration has said it has obtained assurances from Hamas that the faction will disarm, though no specific schedule has been established. They remains reluctant to give up its arms without firm assurances about the future of its members.
