The Details Known Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Shooting
At least 16 people were killed and over 40 sustained injuries when attackers shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have called a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the death toll is 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were transported to hospital.
Those who died are still awaiting officially identified, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the victims who have been named at this time.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Known as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She described the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
