The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Track
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure by Critical Role, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It features our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for characters such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.
Overall, the opening looks stunning. However, I felt that an element was lost in the music selection.
This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional song composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the official score of the same name, the second one put out by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it only got better when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The show's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.
Of course, the creators has already said that the animated show will have some changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of the second series, the actual play are available on Spotify and the video site.
