The Owls Receive 12-Point Deduction Following Entering Financial Insolvency
The club's supporters labeled Wednesday as “one of the most bittersweet days in our 158-year history” after the team was placed into administration under owner Dejphon Chansiri and deducted 12 points.
Financial Turmoil Leads to Deduction
The Owls now face likely demotion following the league's punishment placed them at minus six points, 15 points from safety. Players and staff have not been paid on time in five of the past seven months, adding to the club's instability.
Administrator Begbies Traynor have taken control of proceedings aiming to sell club assets, along with Hillsborough stadium, to settle outstanding debts estimated at £1m in tax. Shortly after the club entered administration, stadium seating with the owner's name were removed from the North Stand.
“Entering administration was the inevitable outcome of years of financial mismanagement, poor oversight, and repeated failures to engage credible buyers the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust said. “Administration is not something to be celebrated. It needn’t have ended this way. But we're relieved the owner has departed.”
Manager’s Perspective For New Beginning
Sheffield Wednesday's coach, Henrik Pedersen held talks with administrators along with his coaching team, players, and staff on Friday morning. The Dane said entering administration was necessary to embark on a new era.
Pedersen stressed “a sad situation can also still be a good day”, noting: “Recent months showed the situation was unsustainable. We need a fresh restart to use the potential of this fantastic club. Now optimism and hope for brighter days prevail. I envision a promising future for the club.”
Employee Concerns
Employees expressed emotion upon hearing the update, as the manager explained: “Uncertainty exists. Will wages be paid? What happens now? Will things improve? Or won't they? The general feeling was that they are all looking forward to the future together with Sheffield Wednesday
Ongoing Financial Struggles
The situation at Wednesday worsened significantly in recent months after the former manager and players left following unpaid wages. The EFL expressed concern about the club’s finances earlier this season.
From that point, Wednesday operated with minimal funds, applying all revenue including league payments to address liabilities. Facing potential closure orders from HMRC, the owner exhausted alternatives.
Insolvency Practitioner's Comments
A lead administrator, Kris Wigfield from the insolvency firm said: “Similar to other teams, the club sustained heavy losses for several years, previously covered by the owner. Due to increased financial pressure, the owner has chosen to place the club into administration which will enable us to market the club and the stadium together, which is great news for supporters.”
Regulatory Response
Government official Lisa Nandy commented on the situation served as another reminder of the need for the independent football regulator, recently legislated. It should be active by the 2027-28 campaign.
“My club Wigan faced similar issues, I know everyone who loves the club will be hoping for a resolution as soon as possible,” Nandy said.
Supporter Actions
Wednesday fans avoided club shops and products this season and thousands stayed away from their home fixture against Middlesbrough in the latest boycott. Before Oxford’s visit on Saturday, the administrator and the supporters’ trust called on fans to reengage.
“The club’s most urgent need is stability and income, according to the trust. Protest succeeded; rebuilding starts today. Each purchase and visit supports recovery. Meaningful change is possible if we act. It's time to back the team.”
Future Prospects
The trust said it expected strong interest from buyers while developing a supporter-backed purchase plan guaranteeing “liquidation remains off the table”.
Pedersen, previously assistant to Röhl, hasn't accepted demotion despite the tough situation. “We have to be a new Sheffield Wednesday with an old heart, he said. We have a fantastic club and it deserves to grow. I'm confident we can stay up. We will keep fighting
