The teenager has featured in seven matches for the Spanish giants, featuring five starts.

When an 18-year-old creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a crucial Champions League match against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.

During his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners secured a 3-0 last-16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a last eight place.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent Through The Academy

The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.

He progressed to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and determination he added to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'

In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the first team and awarded him minutes in pre-season.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that led to the meeting with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I started playing the game, every day you go to train and each day you play a match," stated Pitarch following his debut.

"I've just achieved my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Handed a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.

Pitarch has taken it with performances that have defied his age and experience.

"He's a very quick player, and you can observe what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He is extremely dynamic, with excellent stamina, effort and mobility."

The player's mindset has also impressed his manager.

"His greatest quality is his character," continued he. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand fans might be astonished to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to do what he usually does.

"He will keep receiving opportunities with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before joining the club's famous La Fabrica system.

He holds dual Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the option to represent either country at senior international level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they play in a official senior international match.

Pitarch has featured for Spain at youth level, representing both the U19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with keen attention.

In a recent interview, Pitarch said: "I haven't made my ultimate choice yet. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."

This scenario echoes that of other bi-national players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal chose La Roja, Diaz opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at City, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the team chase trophies to come.

After his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I try not to think about it excessively - I must earn my minutes on the pitch," he commented after the success at Etihad Stadium.
