Tuchel Desires Bellingham's Passion Provided England's Star Leaves His Ego at the Door.
A single omission did the trick. A second one and it would have started to look vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, who is far too wily not to understand that claiming the World Cup trophy demands help from the talented midfielder, although it is equally up to the player to blend into the game plans and squad hierarchies required with the national team now that he is returned to the manager's supportive environment.
Tuchel seeks the player's competitive fire, his fire, but it is about channeling it in the right way. Skill counts but the squad understand from past setbacks that there is a cost when celebrity dominates. Nevertheless, a statement has been delivered.
The midfielder was given food for thought after his omission of the previous squad. He watched the national side secure their spot at next summer’s World Cup without him. He watched the young talent shine as a high-pressing No 10. He heard the coach talk about valuing the team's dynamism and principles. Inevitably, he has responded in winning fashion, finding the back of the net for his club versus Barcelona and the Italian side. His selection was inevitable; leaving him out again would have left his World Cup hopes precarious.
The expectation is that Tuchel will have a midfielder directed towards pressuring the opposition instead of teammates. Ultimately, on a pure footballing level, there is no advantage to creating tension with an elite performer in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period not playing has shown him that an international career is a precious, uncertain thing. Tuchel, on his side, can now throw a protective shield around the youngster after demonstrating that he is not afraid to drop big names.
“No issue exists regarding him, there is no problem about his personality,” the German commented. “Bellingham possesses a competitive streak. You need a sharp mentality to succeed at the top that he reached. We all need to support him and create a setting where he can [have] this edge against rivals and towards the goals we are striving for as a team.”
Bellingham dominated most of the attention at Tuchel’s squad announcement for this month’s final group games versus Serbia and Albania. Who else? Well, how about Phil Foden? This is a further gifted No 10 requiring coaching. Foden has not played for England since spring and has struggled to reach his best this year but the boss was impressed by the 25-year-old after his performance in the Champions League match versus Borussia Dortmund this week.
The issue, though, is the best way to deploy the multiple playmakers at the team's disposal. Rogers and Eberechi Eze have earned their places and there will be a good argument to select Cole Palmer once he recovers from a persistent groin problem. Is selecting five No 10s to the World Cup be excessive? The previous manager never found the right blend at the European Championship. He compromised by forcing both stars into the team, cramping the captain's influence in the process.
It is hard to see the current manager repeating that if it disrupts the team harmony. Space exists for one No 10, with speedy wingers on the flanks. Clarity is beneficial. Bellingham is selected as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, called up for the first occasion, is a central midfielder and the recalled Adam Wharton will compete with Elliot Anderson as a No 6. Additionally, there is no position on the wing for the City star, who has to be through the middle. The coach prefers him close to the striker. “It does not make sense to ask Phil: ‘We want you on the pitch but there’s no space in your preferred role, could you fill in at the left side? Can you play right wing?” he stated. “Phil will play in the No 9-10ish position, through the center. I have this fantasy about him for years. I think it suits him the most.”
Tuchel conceded there are occasions when Foden has appeared uncomfortable in an England shirt. “One senses as if, ‘Does he like it?’ And a player like him who has this childish joy for the game, then obviously an issue exists, whether it's the position, the environment, I don’t know.
“In my opinion he is also so used to representing his club in a certain structure, to have a clear task. I think he benefits a lot from clear instructions. What is my position? In which positions am I to receive the ball? When should I to accelerate the match? What are my to defend?
The manager talked about one star bursting through for easy finishes and the other netting strikes from outside the box. He added he has a longlist of many candidates. Several players, others, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. A new face is recognized for his excellent performances for City at defense. Intrigue is high.
Leaving out of Ollie Watkins means there is no like-for-like alternative for the captain in this squad. Fascinatingly, he hinted at deploying the playmaker as a deep-lying striker against Serbia or the other. Other options, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and the winger are other options should he be absent. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for trying new things.
Meanwhile, it is additionally a moment to foster Kane’s relationship with his teammate flowing. It is remarkable that you have to go back to the latter assisting the captain to score in an international match against the Scots in over a year ago to find the one and only time in many appearances for the national team when the duo combined for a goal. The coach will be aware that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball a single time during England’s draws with Denmark and another at the European Championship. Their partnership is missing.
“At this point at some point it becomes the responsibility of the individuals,” Tuchel stated. He is not afraid to speak frankly. Remains a feeling of Bellingham having to prove himself. He cannot even be assured to start versus Serbia and Albania. Tuchel desires him committed but he will be monitoring him closely. Leave self-importance outside. It will make a powerful England team into an more effective one.
